Article
The research purpose is to assess the effectiveness of a remote physical fitness and wellness program based on low-volume whole body high-intensity interval training (LV whole-body HIIT) in improving health-related physical conditions in overweight senior female students.
Materials and methods of the research. The study involved 28 female students from Pskov State University, who were randomly divided into two equal groups: a control group (CG) and an experimental group (EG). The control group continued their regular physical activity, while the experimental group participated in a remote physical fitness and wellness program. The program lasted for 6 weeks and included 22 progressive LV whole-body HIIT workouts. Before and after the experiment, the physical conditions related to health were assessed for participants in both groups, including body mass index (BMI), functional cardiovascular fitness (FCF), flexibility of the muscles in the back of the thigh, and dynamic muscular endurance of the abdominal, upper body, and lower body muscles.
Results of the research and their discussion. After the experiment, the control group (CG) did not show statistically significant changes in the assessed components of physical conditions. In the experimental group (EG), positive changes were observed in the following parameters: BMI decreased from 27.4±1.3 to 26.4±1.4 units (p<0.0001), FCF measured by the Ruffier test decreased from 10.2±1.9 to 7.6±1.2 points (p<0.0001), flexibility of the muscles in the back of the thigh measured by the active knee extension test decreased from 15.4±2.1 to 13.3±1.6 degrees (p=0.0017), dynamic muscular endurance of the abdominal muscles increased from 28.1±4.1 to 40.1±4.7 repetitions (p<0.0001), muscular endurance of the upper body and chest muscles increased from 7.6±1.7 to 21.9±3.1 repetitions (p<0.0001), and muscular endurance of the lower body muscles increased from 35.9±4.0 to 52.2±6.1 repetitions (p<0.0001), according to the corresponding test exercises.
Conclusion. The study has shown that remote LV whole-body HIIT programs can be effective for improving the health of overweight senior female students.
